Butterfly effect
“The essence of life is to serve others and to do good” -Aristoteles.
“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear, and the blind can see” -Mark Twain
Have you ever heard of the Butterfly Effect? I came across this interesting concept recently and was wondering if you guys already know about it (maybe you have). It's a fascinating idea that explores how small actions can have a significant impact on the future.
But, why is it called The butterfly effect?
So there was this weather guy called Edward Lorenz who figured out that a butterfly flapping its wings could eventually lead to a huge tornado weeks later. Crazy, right? It just goes to show that even small things can have a big impact down the line.
I have experienced something called the butterfly effect, where a small action from me or someone else can have a significant impact on others. It brings me immense joy to know that my actions have caused a positive change in someone's life, big or small. This feeling inspires me to be more kind and compassionate towards others.
But in my blog post now, I want to share other people's actions toward me that got me into the butterfly effect.
I remember a Sunday morning when I wasn't in a good mood and decided to walk to the traditional market nearby.
I wasn't paying attention to my surroundings, initially planning to keep a straight face, and had my earphones on, blasting loud music. Until I stood at the edge of the roadway, intending to cross, I noticed three men - a middle-aged man and two elders - standing there with beaming smiles, ready to help anyone cross the road ((I don’t know what to call them, but if you live in Banjarmasin, you must have been familiar with a man standing with an orange or blue vest to help you cross the road.))
When I saw their face while they helped me, I couldn't help but smile back at them. You know, I continued to walk and found myself smiling without even realizing it?? I even smiled at anyone who met my gaze on the street and radiated the same positive energy as the three men who had helped me earlier. I even decided to buy them a small snack as a token of my appreciation–which if we think of that, it has been their job to help other people cross the road. Yet somehow, their genuineness in the job resulted in other people giving them more appreciation, through money or even food.
The three men perhaps never guessed that after they helped me cross the road, they received a small snack from a stranger, which was me. And I never guessed either that a small act they did for me managed to lighten my mood and make me feel happier on that day. This is what the butterfly effect means.
Have you ever considered how the butterfly effect could potentially position you in the peak of good fortune? It may seem far-fetched, but think about it. As a student, you go about your daily business, always greeting your lecturers with a smile and offering them assistance whenever you can. Your kindness and compassion do not go unnoticed, and one day, your lecturer asks you to undertake a project that could prove extremely valuable for your future career. Who knows where this stroke of luck could take you?
Or as simple as you always showing a good kid act to your parents, and it made them happy so they gave you extra pocket money? Yes, just imagine that. But remember, doing good things just to get something in return is not the right way. Always be genuine in your action, that is how you pull luck into your life in unexpected ways.
Implementing this idea might prove challenging for some individuals to carry out consistently. However, it's certainly worth giving it a shot! I personally attempt to do the same, and I aspire that this blog of mine has a positive ripple effect on my readers too!
